17世紀初頭、英国の開拓団が新大陸ヴァージニアに到着する。先住民の首長の娘ポカホンタスは、精霊の導きにより開拓団の軍人ジョン・スミスと運命的な出会いを果たす。二人は異なる文化や言葉の壁を超えて心を通わすが、両陣営の対立は激化していく。
ディズニー初の実在の人物をモデルにした長編アニメーション。アラン・メンケンによる「カラー・オブ・ザ・ウィンド」などの名曲と共に、壮大な大自然と異なる文化が交錯するドラマが描かれる。アカデミー賞の音楽賞と歌曲賞を受賞した圧倒的な表現力が魅力。
